My submission (part one) to 's Design an Age contest. Names and titles are not my strongest suit, so I've been using Merrochenia as a working title ("meri" = sea in Finnish, "Rochen" = ray in German, plus a Greek/Latin ending tacked on, goodness what a linguistic mess).
So. This is a view of Merrochenia's main harbour at nightfall. It's an inhabited island Age, situated on a planet roughly our size (which means the curvature is kinda exaggerated here for artistic purposes) with around 90% of the surface covered by water.
The daytime is very short, the seasonal shift moves between 4 to 6 hours, followed by a 20-ish-hour-long night. The flora and fauna have adapted to the lack of sunlight in many ways, for example many of the marine animals have developed bioluminescence, including the most important of them all, the Glow Ray, which plays an important role in the islanders' mythology. (More about 'em here)
The main industry of the island is fishing, the main harbour situated on the east coast (the "head") of the island, the smaller back harbour on the west (the "tail"). The fishers usually specify in either daytime fish (larger, more colourful and used often for festivities) or the nighttime fish (smaller, everyday food) and work their hours according to the rise of the sun and moon.
The fishing is supplemented by agriculture. To make the best out of the island's fertile land, the inhabitants build their houses and network in giant trees that span over the island's area, leaving more space for fields.
Part two is here, with more stuff about the Age and its inhabitants. : D
Thank you! I like to try and find the "science" behind how the Age came into being... I'm glad it paid off. I'm hoping to work more on this Age's concept come November.
I love the mood and the detail you've included here. It's very true to the Myst spirit and completely fresh-and-original-feeling at the same time! Bravo!
